“Mondays are always the hardest day for me. There’s school and homework and track practice until 6:30 p.m. I’m usually a little stressed out. I was having trouble transitioning to college life when my coach told me about the multifaith chaplain, Brittany. We hit it off. She understood me and she actually listened. When I told her I liked to watch TV to calm myself down, she offered me a comforting place to do that. She doesn’t live that far off campus, but it’s still nice to get away. For the hour and a half I’m there, I don’t have to worry about track or school or anything I have to do. Every worry just disappears. I live in 280, which feels like a dorm, so it’s hard when I get homesick. At Brittany’s house, the floors creak, her handmade paintings hang on the walls, a lavender vanilla candle is always lit, and there’s a kettle on the stove. It’s like home. She has a big box of different types of teas and a giant array of mugs constantly ready. I always take the mug that has the map of Neverland on it. She makes me hot cocoa with cinnamon, and we sit on her couch and just relax. I grew up the oldest sister in a family of seven, so she’s like the older sister I never had. I can talk to her about all the things my little sisters talk to me about. She just gets it. We comfort each other. After I leave, I feel refreshed. I can’t wait to return, but I’m also ready to delve into work. When I’m with her, I don’t feel alone. I feel warm. I feel present.” –Interview by Kayla Jackson
